How Are You Tonight
Digital channels represent the largest single pool of potential content consumers in history. More media is consumed on YouTube in a week than all of the movie screens in America combined in a year. However, the digital world is absurdly noisy. Audiences demand regular, updated storytelling to remain engaged but when energized can prove to be a powerful tool for real-time, real-world change.
Vulcan Productions was great at grand, impactful storytelling - but the distribution cycle on feature films and TV shows created an audience ebb and flow that wasn't in line with today's audience needs for immediate content consumption and cause-based activism. We needed a commitment to regular digital storytelling and support of emerging media production that would allow us to reach new supporters, grow and sustain that audience and create a rolling snowball effect for our impact and our films.
To catch up with consumer behavior, I proposed creating a small team of producers dedicated to telling impact stories for digital channels and emerging media experiences.
The new team would create meaningful, compelling stories that would help catalyze a broader reach and a larger audience for our films, communications, and impact. Through impact-focused, short-form video and mixed reality productions we would activate a new audience and ignite a digital movement.
Collaboration
I developed, budgeted, evangelized, and created the content strategy for this new initiative. I determined the team makeup, built the team from the ground up, developed the look and feel for our work, and created our digital and social strategies. I oversaw daily production, mentored the team of filmmakers and secured external distribution deals with WaterBear, The Evrgrn Channel, YouTube Social Impact and The Climate Story Network.
Impact
Though our effort was short-lived due to the closure of Vulcan Productions - our films raised awareness and donations for topics ranging from coral reef restoration projects in Kenya, to human-animal conflict issues in Botswana, to homelessness in Seattle. Our conservation films were distributed by The Paradise International Foundation in China where they have been viewed over a million times and are still being used for education in Chinese classrooms.
